Since 2008, CreativeApplications.Net (CAN) has been at the forefront of innovation—facilitating and driving the conversations about technology, society and critical making. It has played an instrumental role in uncovering and contextualising noteworthy work, featured on the festival and gallery circuit or developed as academic research. With over 3,500 catalogued projects, experiments, texts and reviews, CAN plays an instrumental role in shaping the innovative creative practices of tomorrow.[1]

Neural is a printed magazine established in 1993 dealing with new media art, electronic music and hacktivism. It was founded by Alessandro Ludovico and Minus Habens Records label owner Ivan Iusco in Bari (Italy). In its first issue (distributed in November 1993) there was the only translation in Italian of the William Gibson’s Agrippa (a book of the dead) book.[1]

The first topics covered were: cyberpunk (both as a literally and political movement), electronic music, networks and BBS, virtual reality, media, science fiction and UFO. The magazine’s mission was to be a magazine of ideas, becoming a node in a larger network of digital culture publishers. The magazine was also committed to give its topics a proper visual frame: focusing on graphic design and how it could have expressed the electronic culture in a sort of printed ‘interface’, exploiting at the same time the “sensorial” possibilities of the printed page. So, for example the page numbering was strictly in binary numbers for 3 years, then decimal figures were added aside. There was a department with stereogram pictures and the centerfold hosted a few optical art artworks. The graphic design included a fixed space in every article for contact and links, being inspired by the Whole Earth Catalog experiments.[1]

Indexical is dedicated to experimentation in music. Indexical engages the public in radical and unfamiliar work through performance, publication, documentation, educational initiatives, and discussion. We work with historically, culturally, and institutionally underrepresented artists and build community through long-term collaborative projects.[1]

Indexical has presented concerts since 2011, beginning in a converted chapel in Brooklyn and relocating in 2015 to Santa Cruz, California. Since moving to Santa Cruz, Indexical has presented over 75 performances, artist talks, participatory workshops, and large-scale public art events.[1]

In 2018, Indexical formed a 501c3 nonprofit organization with the intention of creating a permanent home for experimental music and art in Santa Cruz. In 2021, Indexical opened a brick-and-mortar venue and gallery space at the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, and projects hosting upwards of 40 performances over the coming season.[1]

Indexical’s programming is supported in part by the Vincent J. Coates Foundation, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, the Arts Council of Santa Cruz County, the WHH Foundation, The Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, the City of Santa Cruz and the Santa Cruz Arts Commission, as well as over 60 individual donors.[1]

V2, Lab for the Unstable Media is an interdisciplinary center for art and media technology in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). V2 presents, produces, archives and publishes research at the interface of art, technology and society. Founded in 1981, V2 offers a platform for artists, designers, scientists, researchers, theorists, and developers of software and hardware from various disciplines to discuss their work and share their findings. In V2's view, art and design play an essential role in the social embedding of technological developments. V2 creates a context in which issues regarding the social impact of technology are explored through critical dialogue, artistic reflection and practice-oriented research.[1]

V2 organizes public programs ranging from exhibitions to workshops, presentations, and community events. These V2events showcase the most exciting developments in the field of art and technology, present V2's research and development, and function as a platform for debate. V2's events offer artists opportunities to present new work to our audience and to exchange ideas with other artists, researchers and technicians. Besides events that take place at V2's venue in Rotterdam, V2 also organizes events at parter institutes and participates in international festivals and symposiums.[2]

V2 has published a number of books on interactive art and related subjects like sociology, media theory, biology, and technological innovation.[3]

The Link Art Center is a curatorial platform promoting contemporary artistic research and critical reflections on the core issues of the information age: it organizes events, publishes books, collaborates and networks with individuals, groups, companies, institutions on a local and international level.[1]

Founded on March 9, 2011 as “Link Center for the Arts of Information Age” by Fabio Paris, Lucio Chiappa and Domenico Quaranta, joined by Matteo Cremonesi in 2014, the Link Art Center acted as a curatorial platform focused on the promotion of contemporary artistic research and critical reflections on the core issues of the information age, through the organization of events, editorial activity, collaboration and networking with individuals, groups, companies and institutions on a local and international level.[2]

Link Cabinet was a single web page hosting solo shows where artists exhibited a single, site-specific artwork. A project by Matteo Cremonesi for the Link Art Center (2014 - 2019) [3]

A publishing initiative of the Link Art Center, Link Editions uses the print on demand (POD) approach, which allows to reduce production costs and environmental impact of publishing to the minimum, and to circulate editorial products online. Edited by Domenico Quaranta, from 2011 to 2018 Link Editions published fifty books.[1]

Link Editions is a publishing initiative of the LINK Center for the Arts of the Information Age. LINK Editions uses the print on demand approach to create an accessible, dynamic series of essays, pamphlets, catalogues and artist books. A keen advocate of the idea that information wants to be free, Link Editions releases its contents free of charge in .pdf format, and on paper at a price accessible to all. Link Editions is a not-for-profit initiative and all its contents are circulated under a Creative Commons license.[4]

VIVO Media Arts Centre, a member of British Columbia Museums Association, brings together artists, video and filmmakers, researchers and activists interested in the history of video-making and its evolution towards the art form. VIVO’s educational program extends beyond the boundaries of video distribution and video archiving. The workshops program offers beginner and intermediate level classes on programming, projection mapping, lighting, sound recording by local experts. VIVO accepts research applications to work closely with the Crista Dahl Media Library and Archive thus contributing to the local and international art and research community and encouraging curatorial collaborations.[1]

VIVO’s mandate is to directly support artists and independent community-based producers to develop, exchange, and disseminate their skills in a supportive environment through accessible services and programs. Our vision is a robust, diverse, and vibrant media arts sector: a catalyst for critical and innovative engagement with the material forms and cultural meanings of media and technology. VIVO’s programs offer a broad range of services and opportunities to artists and the public. They include:

  • Access to the material necessities for quality production through affordable equipment rentals, editing 
facilities, software, and production space.
  • A broad range of skill development and education opportunities that encourage the exploration of 
technology and aesthetics within a critical, artistic framework.
  • Public programming: events, exhibitions, residencies, co-productions, and critical forums.
  • International distribution, work exchange, and media art preservation which supports the aspirations and 
livelihood of artists.
  • Western Canada’s largest public reference library and archive of media art, independent video, and 
related publications, documents, audio recordings, and photographs.

isthisit? is a platform for contemporary art, exhibiting over 700 artists since its creation in May 2016, founded by its current director, artist and curator Bob Bicknell-Knight. Online, it operates as a gallery producing monthly exhibitions showcasing emerging to mid-career artists, hosting a roster of guest curators experimenting with the medium of the internet to interrogate a variety of concepts. The website also hosts monthly residencies, where artists are given a web page to create new work that exists on the internet as a piece of net art. Offline, it has held exhibitions nationally and internationally and is the publisher of isthisit?, a book series released on a triannual basis.[1]
